Welcome to "Our Common Baltic" 2024

GENERAL INFORMATION:

This educational course has over 25 years of history. It started as an annual training on a ship “Amaila” (a 25 m long 100-years old wooden ship!) by sailing in the Baltic Sea and bringing together young professionals and activists interested in the Baltic Sea protection.

Since then, it gathered over 300 participants from all Baltic countries, enriching their knowledges in the environmental protection and bringing new active people into it.

Edition 2024, COASTWATCH TRAINING & PLASTIC MONITORINg

Our Common Baltic course edition 2024 will be dedicated to CoastWatch training and plastic monitoring in Denmark. Coastwatch is a tool for those who are interested in citizen science and want to personally participate in public observations of the sea coasts, identify problems, and help find solutions to preserve the natural environment of the Baltic Sea.

PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION:

We will start with an introduction on CoastWatch and Plastic monitoring, asking ourself why CoastWatch is needed, how it is organised in Denmark, what we can do according to the plastic audit procedure, and this will be combined with on-site practice.

During the 5 days' event, we will dive in the following topics:

  • Bioindication and water with lectures and practical measurements.
  • Harbour Porpoise, the only whale in the Baltic Sea
  • Meeting with the local community
  • Cross-cutting topics such as climate change and the Lynetteholm as an example of a hotspot and large infrastructure projeсt.
  • The Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP) and good environmental status for the Baltic Sea.

STUDY VISITS & PRACTICAL EXAMPLES:

For each day we will combine lectures in plenum, group work, field work, laboratory work, socializing between the participants and local community. The OCB 2024 programme will present multiple chances for networking and partnership, as well as best examples of environmental activism, and life discussions with the experts.
